The Shack

We are finally unencumbered by shore life! DeAnne's insurance is set, the boat is insured, and my PC is home again (after several days on various FEDEX trucks in Mobile).

Other cruisers tell us this "hurry up and wait" is just warm up until we reach the islands where we will learn the true scope and meaning of waiting.

De Anne has food stowed in every nook and cranny. I have 1 large and 2 small gas cans filled and strapped to the rail. DeAnne will walk the propane tank across the bridge for a fill-up. I offered to help but she doesn't want me and my short, stubby legs slowing her pace.

Below is a picture of our favorite Mobile hangout called "The River Shack". Some new cruising friends, Brad, Jay, and Gary treated us to dinner there after we loaned them our car; however, we have been back several times on our own. The name is an apt description. It is a plywood shack decorated with a few discarded boat parts and, central heat is provided by an open burner propane heater with a 20lb tank. The heater is moved around frequently based on where customers come in and sit. During happy hour a dozen raw oysters, served with a pile of crackers (saltines - not people), sauce, and a side of fresh-grated horseradish are $4. Bigger and fresher than any I have ever had anywhere!

Since the Shack is just across the river it is 2 miles away by land and bridge or 200 yards by water. Because I sold the car last Thursday we will inflate the dingy today in preparation for our next visit.
